Skunk Odor Gone

By Gretchen Messersmith

Dear Friend,

As you read the various skunk odor removal methods below, please know that when it comes to removing a skunk smell from your pet, the secret is that it may be not just one of the methods that gets the smell out, but a combination.

I wish I had immediate access to this information when my dog Max got hit with the skunk spray – it would have saved me so much time and worry.

The best part? All the skunk odor removal methods below are fast and easy.

Below you will find the Top 12 skunk odor removal secrets that I narrowed down from a total of 58 methods that I uncovered during my lengthy research. (I tried to do a Top 10, but all 12 that are included here have now proven to be the most effective skunk odor removal methods, so I just couldn’t leave 2 out!)

I have been most careful to see that no impractical instructions are included because of my sincere desire to be helpful.

Although this report was written with dogs in mind (after all it was my dog’s mishap that led me down this road to begin with :), it will work equally well on other pets such as cats, too.

Please note, because of the huge variation in pet sizes, the directions contained within this report do not always give exact quantities in measurements. Using your own best sense will give you an idea of how much of each ingredient should be used for the size of your pet. The amount of each ingredient to be used will also depend on where your pet was sprayed, and how much spray landed on your pet.

It is my sincere hope that this helps you as it helped me when I was in your situation…

Method 1: Peroxide/ Baking Soda/Dish Soap Combo A Perfect Trio of Skunk Odor Destroyers Three items you likely could have on hand, right now, can be combined to form an excellent skunk odor remover. This is often an extremely successful method. Be sure to heed the warnings given for this method, however.

What you need: • 1 Quart of 3% Hydrogen Peroxide • ¼ of a Cup of Baking Soda (Plain) • 2 Tablespoons of Dish Soap that is used in the sink (not dishwasher soap)

WARNING 1: Do not put these ingredients in a closed container as they will cause a reaction and blow the lid off of the container.

WARNING 2: AVOID getting any of the solution in the pet’s eyes or mouth.

WARNING 3: Do not store this mixture. Throw any unused portion of it away.

Step 1: Mix everything together into a huge bowl.

Step 2: As soon as the mixture foams up, wash the dog completely with this, covering all of the fur. Apply the mixture when it is still “foamy.” Make certain you are wearing rubber gloves. Also, please note that if you wait too long the foam will disappear and you will have to re-make the mixture.

Step 3: To apply it to the dog’s face, use a washcloth and make absolutely certain that none of the solution ends up in the dog’s eyes or mouth. Leave on for 3 to 5 minutes then wash off completely.

Method 2: Orange Zest Naturale Where Florida’s Finest Fruit Becomes Your Pet’s Saving Grace

Removing skunk odor from a dog can be challenging at times. Expensive chemical cleaners can actually hurt the animal's eyes, too. This natural method has worked for many. It's important when trying any method to try and catch the odor as quickly as possible. If the spray has dried on the dog, it will be harder to remove using this particular method.

What you need: • Orange Juice • Orange Zest • Dish Soap that is used in the sink (not dishwasher soap)

Step 1: Mix orange juice, orange zest and dish soap together to form a pasty, pulpy muck of sorts. A good blender can be useful for creating the mixture.

Step 2: Saturate the dog in the pulp and zest mixture. Make sure all impacted areas of the coat are completely covered.

Step 3: Let the mixture set in for about 10 minutes or so. The longer the better.

Step 4: Wash the dog as normal.

Step 5: Repeat if necessary.

Method 3: Baking Soda Miracle From Your Kitchen Cabinet to Your Dog to Banish the Skunk Smell This method can work very well in the dry form or even when made into a paste. The dry powder form is only very effective on small spots that are freshly sprayed.

IMPORTANT: In this step it is crucial that you wash the dog normally before and after applying the treatment to the fur. If at all possible, wash the dog as normal outside before applying this method.

What you need: • Baking Soda • Water (Optional)

Step 1: Either put dry baking soda directly onto the dog's coat or mix it with water to create a paste of sorts and rub it onto the coat.

WARNING: Take care not to allow the paste to get into the dog's eyes if at all possible.

Don't worry if he licks it a little. This will not hurt the animal.

Step 2: Allow it to soak in a while so it can absorb the odors correctly. About 10 to 20 minutes will generally do the trick.

Step 3: Wash the dog as normal.

Step 4: Repeat if necessary.

Method 4: Soda Pop Surprise

Not Just for Refreshment Anymore

This is a bit unorthodox as far as skunk odor removal goes, but believe it or not, it has been proven to be very effective. The upside of this method is it is fairly inexpensive and it doesn't run the risk of hurting the animal.

The soda pop might attract ants though, so do take the time to properly clean up after the soaking process.

What you need: • One 2-Liter Bottle of a Clear Soda Pop Step 1: Completely saturate the dog in a clear soda, such as 7UP or Sprite. Take care to get the affected parts of the coat in particular. It's wise to do this outside or within an enclosed tub to keep any shaken off soda from being left on surfaces.

Step 2: Allow the soda to soak on the fur for a while. Step 3: Completely wash the dog as normal. Step 4: Repeat if needed. 17

Method 5: The Power of Tomato Pulp A New Twist On an Old Method

The overwhelming consensus is that pouring tomato juice on a dog usually does nothing more than give you a dog that smells like he has just been sprayed by a skunk in the kitchen of an Italian restaurant!

With that in mind, this is a higher-powered spin off of the ineffective old tomato juice remedy. ALERT: This method can get quite messy, so take care to have the dog properly confined to protect the bathroom or house.

What you need: • Ripe Tomatoes (Stewed Tomatoes if ripe ones aren’t available) • A blender (optional) • A towel

Step 1: Get ripe tomatoes and mash them, skin, seeds, juice and all into a mush. If these aren't available, stewed tomatoes should work. A blender can be very useful in creating the mix.

Step 2: Rub the mixture onto the part of the coat that has been sprayed. Don't bother rubbing it onto areas that have not been sprayed. It will just make for a larger mess to clean up.

Step 3: Allow to set in for a few minutes.

Step 4: Wash the dog thoroughly with regular dog shampoo.

Step 5: Repeat if the smell is still present.

The next three methods focus on items that you use for your teeth! It turns out that the makers of these kind of products know what they’re doing when it comes to odor removal, as you’re about to see…

Method 6: Mouthwash Mission A Quick Trip to Your Bathroom Cabinet, and Soon Your Dog is Smelling Better Than Ever Like the next method, Method 7, this is a little unusual, but it truly can work wonders and leave Fido smelling minty fresh. What you need: • Mouthwash

Step 1: Soak the area of the coat that has been affected by skunk spray with mouth wash.

Step 2: Allow the mouth wash to settle in for about 10 to 20 minutes.

Step 3: Thoroughly rinse the dog.

Step 4: Wash the dog as normal to remove the mouth wash and any odor that might be lingering.

Step 5: Repeat if necessary.

Method 7: Tooth Whitening Gel

Put to the Test

Whiten Your Teeth, Then Remove Skunk Smell? Yes!

This might sound a little bizarre, but it seems to have very good results, especially in small areas where contact with skunk spray has been minimal.

What you need: • Tooth Whitening Gel

Step 1: Rub regular tooth whitening gel directly onto hands and mix in.

Step 2: Massage the gel onto the affected parts of the coat.

Step 3: Allow to settle in for a while. 22

Step 4: Completely wash the dog in normal canine shampoo.

Step 5: Repeat if needed.

Method 8: Toothpaste Treatment The Third Effective Dental-related Skunk Eliminating Solution This method is easy to try and doesn't cost that much to attempt. A large dog might require several tubes.

What you need: • Toothpaste Step 1: Rub toothpaste directly onto the affected portions of the coat. Don't bother with the parts of the coat that have not been sprayed. Step 2: Let the muck set in for a bit. Do take care to keep the dog penned, crated or confined in a tub during this process. It can get a little messy! Step 3: Rinse out the toothpaste and bath as normal. 24 Step 4: Repeat if necessary.

Method 9: Apple Cider Vinegar Concoction A Natural Method that Works This is another natural remedy that will not hurt the animal in any way. WARNING: The vinegar can sting the eyes though, so do take care to avoid this. A bit of petroleum jelly or special eye gel for dogs can help avoid any problems here.

What you need: • Apple Cider Vinegar • Water • A towel Step 1: Create a mix of one part apple cider vinegar to two parts water. Step 2: Saturate the affected part of the dog's coat in this liquid mixture. 26 Step 3: Allow the mix to settle into the coat, letting the acidic vinegar neutralize the skunk spray. Step 4: Completely wash the dog in regular shampoo. Take care not to allow the vinegar or soap to get into the animal's eyes. Step 5: If the odor is still heavy, repeat and allow the mix to set in longer.

Method 10: Sanitary Solution Don’t Laugh, This Method Is Quite Effective As you can tell by now, I am only about getting the skunk smell out of your pet. As with all methods included, this one is proven to work, so it had to be added here. This method should have the dog smelling fantastic in no time. It requires the powder for do-it-yourself home douches. This is ideal for in-home use since the mess involved is quite minimal. What you need: • Water • Powdered Douche Solution

Step 1: Fill a tub with water and powdered douche solution. Premixed douche solutions will work, as well. A fair amount of them will be needed, however. Plan on using several douches for a full-sized dog. Step 2: Put the dog in the tub and thoroughly soak. Allow the solution to settle in for about 10 minutes. 28 Step 3: Wash and rinse the dog as normal. Step 4: Repeat if necessary. This method might require several attempts to fully work.

Method 11: Dish Soap Satisfaction The Miracle that’s Sitting on top of Your Sink This is a very easy creation to mix up and try. It requires liquid dish soap, vinegar and baking soda. A variation of it calls for using water instead of vinegar.

What you need: • Liquid Dish Soap (Not Dishwasher Soap) • Vinegar • Baking Soda

Step 1: Create a gel of dish soap, vinegar and baking soda. Step 2: Massage the gel onto the affected hair and skin. Step 3: Allow the mixture to soak in for a while. 30 Step 4: Wash the dog normally, avoiding the eyes. The dish soap won't hurt them, but the vinegar might sting a bit. Step 5: If the smell is still present, repeat the above steps and allow the mix to soak in longer.

Method 12: Lemony Fresh A New Twist on an Old Standby In days gone by, people would try using a mix of lemon juice and baking soda on skunk smells. The results were mixed at best. This is a spin off and vast improvement on that old lemon juice method. Rather than use a mix, this method calls for the direct use of fresh lemons on the coat.

What you need: • Lemons • Vinegar • Baking Soda Step 1: Cut lemons into easy to handle halves. Step 2: Rub the opened lemons onto the fur directly. 32 Step 3: Allow the juice, seeds and pulp to settle in for a few minutes. Step 4: Completely wash the dog. Step 5: Repeat or try a different method if necessary.

As you can see, it really is simple to remove the skunk odor from your pet for good, making your pet smell as clean and fresh as ever! If the smell has made its way into your house, to deodorize your house, pour coffee grounds in small containers throughout the house along with a bowl of apple cider vinegar in every room. This will clear out the smell in no time flat. My story finished with a happy conclusion because the smell was cleared out 100% by Friday (the day before my family reunion). And at the reunion, no one suspected a thing! It is my sincere hope that your skunk odor removal story ends happily as well.
