How to Clear the Air After a Skunk Sprays Your Cat
Avoiding Feline Frenzy When Skunk Odor Removal Is Necessary
Few animals are harder to handle when they're upset, angry and feel like they've been disgraced than the common domestic cat. If the family cat happens to get sprayed by a skunk, the indignation might run to extremes.
There are a few very good ways to help ensure the family cat gets properly cleaned up without its owners needing stitches. There are no guarantees though as cats and baths tend to go together like oil and water. Add to the equation the fact more than a single bath might come into play and the proposition's risk becomes clear.
Still, there are steps cat lovers can take to help make sure their favorite feline smells great once more. It's a simple step-by-step process that has an easy (but more costly) out, too.
The Importance Of Crating
Unless everything is at hand to wash the cat immediately, it is very likely best it be crated while the right supplies are gathered. A cat that has been sprayed is going to be upset. It will want to clean the smell off and will quite likely rub on anything that it can come in contact with to do so.
Protect the house, furniture, children and clothing from kitty's desire to not smell like a skunk by pulling out the cat crate while the necessary items are put in order. There are a number of different options for skunk odor removal in cats, but the basic supply list include:
- An extra pair of hands. Chances are it is going to be a whole lot easier to get the cat completely skunk odor free if someone else is enlisted to either help hold it or wash it.
- Towel, washcloth. It is best to select those that can just go in the trash afterward, unless of course, kitty has already rolled in the laundry or other clothing.
- A venue. While it is generally easier to wash a dog outdoors, a cat is a completely different animal. Consider removing towels, rugs and other items that might absorb skunk odors from the bathroom and using the tub for maximum insurance (the closed door) the cat cannot get out until the process is completed.
- Supplies. Whatever cleaning method is tried, make sure to have it on hand before removing the cat from the crate and into the tub.
Options For Cleaning
There are a number of different ways to remove skunk odor from a cat. They include:
- Vinegar and water. A lot of pet owners say a good soaking in vinegar and water can do the trick. The soaking part is where it gets tricky with a cat.
- Soda pop. Many cat owners say a quick soak in a 7Up type soda, followed by a regular bath works wonders.
Cats and skunks sometimes meet. While it doesn't always result in disaster, sometimes the cat comes out on the losing end. Taking the right steps can help make sure the cat gets properly cleaned up without ruining its house or people in the process.
